Why will my laptop not recognize the sims 3?

it recognizes other disc's, it installed norton and Microsoft office fine but when i try to put the sims 3 onto it, it makes the normal whirring noises, but nothing happens. i went into the computer bit and clicked onto the dvd drive, but then the window freezes and it asks me to either wait for response or to close it down. why won't it recognize it?
