How would you define what a managing partner is to somebody who doesn't live in the US?

Yep, I can't really quite explain it other than it's a coveted job position that auditors and lawyers (anybody else I'm missing?) can someday get promoted to. I mean, I don't really know what a managing partner does in a firm other than it being firm specific.
